A Day at Hunt Club Farms: Embracing Nature and Caring for Pets as a Healthcare Worker
Posted by Christina Kinerk-Cruce on 25th Oct 2024
This weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting Hunt Club Farms in Virginia Beach—a local gem that’s perfect for reconnecting with nature and spending quality time with animals. From the lively petting farm to the beautiful walking trails, it’s an ideal place for animal lovers to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you're petting goats, observing birds, or just taking a peaceful walk through the gardens, it’s a relaxing and fun experience for all ages.
As I explored the farm, it reminded me of how deeply connected many healthcare workers are to their pets. Our furry friends offer us unconditional love, which is especially comforting after long, stressful shifts. However, juggling the demands of both work and pet ownership can sometimes be challenging. So, while reflecting on my time at the farm, I wanted to share a few tips for healthcare workers who are also pet owners:
1. Prioritize Routine
Healthcare schedules can be unpredictable, but pets thrive on routine. Try to keep consistent feeding, walking, and playtimes, even if it means enlisting help when your schedule is packed. This stability helps reduce anxiety for pets, especially when you're working long hours.
2. Enrich Your Pet’s Environment
Pets need mental stimulation just as much as physical exercise. Consider using interactive toys, treat puzzles, or window perches to keep them engaged while you’re at work. For dogs, leaving a few safe chew toys or turning on calming music can help them relax while you're away.
3. Use Your Breaks for Quick Check-Ins
If your schedule allows, use technology to check in on your pets during your breaks. There are many pet cameras available that allow you to talk to and even dispense treats for your pets remotely. This can give both you and your pets some comfort while you're apart.
4. Exercise Together
After a long day, it might be tempting to skip a walk, but exercising with your pet can be a great way to de-stress. Whether it's a walk around the neighborhood or a quick game of fetch, these moments not only keep your pet healthy but also provide you with fresh air and movement.
5. Epic Scrubs: Perfect for Pet Owners
If you’re like many healthcare workers who have pets, you know how frustrating it can be when your work clothes are covered in pet hair. Fortunately, Epic scrubs are not only durable and comfortable, but they’re also pet hair resistant! This makes them a great choice for animal lovers who want to keep a professional appearance without worrying about pet hair clinging to their scrubs. It’s just one more way you can transition smoothly from caring for patients to caring for your pets.
Visiting Hunt Club Farms was a great reminder of the joy that animals bring into our lives and how they can serve as a source of calm amidst a busy healthcare career. Whether you’re caring for your own pet or just spending time around animals, taking a break to reconnect with nature is something every healthcare worker can benefit from. And if you haven’t visited Hunt Club Farms yet, it’s a perfect weekend outing for any animal lover!
